Students up to and including 15 years old use Minnows, Sprites and Sit-on-Top kayaks.

We teach them the basics of paddling a kayak, including:

• How to hold and use a paddle
• How to put on on and correctly wear a buoyancy aid
• How to paddle in a straight line and how to turn

During these sessions the students are having fun and learning without even realising it.  We play games that encourage water safety and water confidence

Here are some examples:

Trust and Confidence Games

Swapa Boat:                         students link together in their boats while two nominated people from opposite ends of the chain are given the task of swapping boats. To do this two students have to walk across the top of the chain, giving them confidence on the water.

Ball Tag:                                 to state the obvious we play tag with a ball. As with the other games it tests the student’s water confidence, co-ordination and paddle skills.

Other Games:                       Amazing Race, The Big Slide, Jumping into the Deep                                                 Blue, Boat Dancing

All kayak trips are weather dependent.

Students over 15 years old can participate in our Sports Programme.  These senior students will paddle a mixture of flat water boats and sea kayaks as they develop their paddling skills.

The Sports Programme is available during school term and it is advisable that students attend weekly during this time to achieve their unit standards.
